Why Clear Coat Peels in South Florida

Clear coat is the thin transparent layer that sits on top of your vehicle’s color and gives it gloss and UV protection. In our climate, intense year-round sun is the number one cause of clear coat failure — UV radiation slowly degrades the resin until the layer loses adhesion and begins to flake, bubble, or peel away in sheets.

Once peeling starts, it cannot be polished or buffed out — the layer has physically failed. Compounding only removes more of the surrounding clear coat. The only real fix is to strip the affected area back to a sound surface and refinish it. The sooner that happens, the smaller (and cheaper) the repair area stays.

Our Clear Coat Repair Process

We assess how far the failure has spread, then sand the affected panel down to a stable layer, feathering the edges so the repair blends. The panel is re-based as needed, re-cleared, and color-sanded and polished to match the gloss of the surrounding paint.

Because peeling clear coat is a paint-refinishing job rather than a wash-and-wax service, every job is quoted individually after we see the vehicle — panel size, paint color, and how many panels are affected all drive the price.
